Cirque du Vin Red Blend
What: Aromas of black currants, sage, leather, cherries and spice fill the glass. Lightly toasted oak with hints of vanilla follow the fruit and spice. The palate is fresh and layered with soft tannins. –From their website
What: “This wine displays lifted tropical fruits with notes of lantana and capsicum. There is a passionfruit entry on the palate coupled with citrus and wild cape gooseberry notes that linger, and are quite literally mouthwatering! This is a balanced wine, with a texture that will match well with food but is equally enjoyable on its own.

Fat Bastard Chardonnay
What: Vineyards: To craft the Fat bastard Chardonnay, grapes are sourced from all over the Languedoc-Rousillon, from the banks of the Rhone in the east to Carcassonne in the west, and from the foothills of the Massif Central in the north to the Mediterranean coast in the south. These different origins give the wine the balanced fruit flavor and acidity that have made it a consumer favorite.

Tasting notes: Round in the mouth with white flower aromas and a long, toasty finish.

Food Pairings: Perfect match with a variety of cheeses, poultry and cream sauce pastas, or when relaxing with friends and family.

Fleur de California Pinot Noir
What: Fleur de California is our bright, fresh, charming, and flavorful Pinot Noir from Carneros. The brilliant ruby color sets the stage for aromas of ripe cherry and cranberry, with hints of white pepper and nutmeg. While dominated by effusive fruit flavor, the wine is soft, supple and rich in the mouth. This flower of a wine may be enjoyed today, served cool, alongside an appetizer of pate & smoked salmon, with broiled Portobello Mushrooms with garlic or as an aperitif.–From their Website
What: Explosive aromas brimming with lemon, lime and citrus blossom mingle with gooseberry and passion fruit to proudly proclaim this wine’s varietal. A generous, fruit-forward palate shows juicy citrus flavors of lime, grapefruit and tangerine, balanced by bright, crisp acidity. The pleasant finish persists on the palate with great length of flavor. This is an easy-sipping, eminently drinkable wine that doesn’t sacrifice complexity or varietal character in its quest to be flat-out enjoyable. The perfect aperitif, this wine also makes an ideal partner to oysters and nearly any shellfish, as well as salads and light fish and chicken dishes–From their Website
Kris handcrafted Pinot Grigio features a flavor profile as playful and expressive as its label suggests.
Appellation: Delle Venezie, Indicazione Geografica Tipica
Wine Characteristics: Pale yellow in color with brilliant greenish reflections, enticing aromas of acacia flowers, citrus, tangerine, and hints of apricots and almonds. Kris is lean and refreshing on the palate with hints of blossom and honey.

Here are the wines presented:

Fire Road Sauvignon Blanc 2008
What: From the label: “Marlborough’s worst ever fire, Boxing Day 2000, burnt 6000 ha, for over three days, killed thousands of stock and threatened the wine town of Blenheim, as well as as number of vineyards and wineries. Disaster was avoided by the brave residents, of what is now known as Fireroad, who battled the blaze, by using buckets and hand held hoses and were eventually assisted by a fortunate wind shift. The fire vineyard flourish in the same hot and dry climate that was the catalyst for such a might blaze. This Sauvignon Blanc is typical Malbourough with flavors of gooseberry, passionfruit and honeysuckle. An ideal wine with fresh seafood or white meat.

Match Book Old Head Chardonnay 2008
What: Why Matchbook? As a farm kid growing up in the late 1950´s and early 1960´s John Giguiere was a confirmed pyromaniac starting various things on fire such as his father´s wheat field. At one point, fearing total ruin from his kids burning him out of the house and farm, his father took them to the city jail for an hour stay to impress upon his brother and him the futility of their fascination with fire. John and his brother answered at a later date by graduating from random fires to the launching of rockets which often blew up at some stage of the it´s journey resulting in more random fires and a call to the local fire department for help. They eventually grew out of this fascination with the “Matchbook” but still have fond memories of the power they possessed. About the Appellation
Matchbook has four products, all focusing on varietals that perform well in the warm Dunnigan Hills climate. We blend a percentage of coastal fruit to the Dunnigan Hills wines to add structure and intensify flavors. –From their Website

d’Arerberg The Stump Jump Red 2008
What: The Story Behind The Name: The name ‘Stump Jump’ pays homage to a significant South Australian invention – the Stump Jump plough. As well as clearing the land around McLaren Vale, it was adopted worldwide in the late 19th century because of its ability to ride over stumps and gnarled roots, saving valuable time and energy.

The Characteristics:
The nose is full of ripe and juicy red fruits and fresh plums mixed with dark cherry, rhubarb and cardamon.

The palate is approachable with juicy fresh red berries, mulberry and a hint of pomegranate. Underlying the generous fruit is a more subtle layer of plum stone, star anise and cinnamon which adds complexity and interest. The soft powdery tannins provide a gentle finish. –From their Website

Bastianich Friuliano
What: A typical Tocai Friulano, which expresses the history and terroir of Friuli. Medium bodied, with ripe, luscious pear flavors carried by a refreshing mineral flavor and zesty mouthwatering acidity that mixed together create a perfect wine to enhance food. The Tocai Friulano grape is also characterized by a slight almond edge. A classic match with Prosciutto. Try also with seafood and fish, veal, pork and Asian/spicy dishes. –From their Website

Nepenthe Charleston PInor Noir 2004
What: The Nepenthe Charleston Pinot Noir is a vineyard and barrel selection, blended with an emphasis on approachability and vibrance of fruit, especially in the wine’s youth. Pinot Noir is known to be a fickle and difficult grape, in both growing and winemaking. However the variety is well-suited to the cool slopes and ancient soils of the Adelaide Hills. The Charleston Pinot Noir is crafted to be supple and approachable in its youth, but with real varietal character and serious structure.–From their Website

TriTono Malbec 2004
What: In 2003, New York restaurateur Joe Bastianich, Argentine vintner Matias Mayol and California winemaker Steve Clifton came together to create TriTono. Indeed, the label is aptly named: the three men bring to this Malbec their respective winemaking experiences and traditions, as well as a common love of food, wine and music. The result is the perfect harmony of fruit and spice, and a symphony of flavors that makes the palate sing!
The Name: A tritono (or tritone) is a musical interval of three whole tones and is the gap between two notes played in succession or simultaneously. In medieval and renaissance music, the interval was seen as dissonant and false, so was banned in music theory. Some writers called it “Diabolus in Musica” probably because it is devilishly difficult to teach singers not to sing it, rather than any work of the Devil, but the “Devil’s Interval” is now often found in music where it gives a sense of tension and intrigue.
Examples include the opening of Black Sabbath’s “Black Sabbath” and the two-note introduction to Hendrix’ “Purple Haze”. Most of the songs in “West Side Story” are underpinned with tritones, and the theme for TV’s The Simpsons uses a tritone in “The Sim-” choral.–From their Website

Yuengling Bock Beer
What: Yuengling Bock Beer to Return in 2010
Pottsville, PA, January 2010 – Last year, D.G. Yuengling & Son, Inc., celebrated their 180th Anniversary by re-introducing a late-winter seasonal classic, Yuengling Bock Beer. Available only in draft, it was the first time a Bock Beer was produced by Yuengling in nearly 40 years. The product was so well received, it will make a triumphant return in both kegs and bottles in January, 2010.

“Local taverns and pubs in our distribution area will once again become a destination for customers to enjoy this product on tap,” commented Lou Romano, Marketing Manager. “Last year, there were many loyal customers looking for Bock in bottles to take home and enjoy with family and friends, but it was not available. There’s a great deal of consumer excitement that it’s coming back in draft and package.”

With a deep amber color, pleasing malt base, and a refreshing hop aroma, Yuengling Bock Beer will be offered in 6-pack (12 oz) bottles, 1/4 barrels, and 1/2 barrels starting January 18, 2010, and will last for approximately 10-12 weeks.

The bottle label and package design is based on actual Yuengling Bock Beer artwork from 1941. It can be found on display in the Yuengling Museum and Gift Shop in Pottsville, PA.–From their Website

Magic Hat Howl Black and Night Lager
What: Born of dark and cold and snow in the marrow of the northeast’s longest night, HOWL comes in on wailing winds with winter-weary eyes burning holes in sunless shadows. In its darkened depths out inner voids are warmed. –From their Website

Weyerbacher QUAD
What: A abbey-style quadruple ale! ig and delicious, QUAD is an elegant dark ale. Rich with complexity and flavor, try savoring it with a fine dinner. You also might enjoy it as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to a dessert, but QUAD stands alone quite well. We recommend enjoying QUAD in a brandy snifter or wineglass so you can drink in the aroma of this fine ale.

As with any higher alcohol beers, QUAD will be at its best after a period 12 months or so in the bottle, perhaps longer. We expect a shelf life of 3-5 years, but go ahead, we know you can’t wait. Enjoy one now, and another every month or two, and you’ll be truly amazed as QUAD gains smoothness and complexity over time as it ages.

Quad is available in November and December. –From their Website

Wild Blue Blueberry Lager
What: Wild Blue is a blueberry lager that fuses the juice of nature’s perfect fruit – blueberries – with premium American and German hops, two row and six-row barley malt and cereal grains. Wild Blue has a full taste with a pleasant blueberry aroma and flavor, and contains 8 percent alcohol by volume (ABV).

Its fun, irreverent spirit is conveyed in every aspect of the beer, from the bottle label that features a bulldog kicking a blueberry to its full-bodied taste. Wild Blue is the perfect drink for adults who are thirsting for something new and will be available in sleek 12-ounce amber glass bottles.–From their Website

Here are the wines presented:

Mandra Rosso Fiano 2008
What: Wine World’s March White Wine of the Month–A vivacious, exciting white. Ripe tropical fruit and citrus notes with full flavors and a nice mineral aspect. Medium body. Dry with a fine balance between the fruit and the acidity. One of our favorite whites. Originating in southern Italy, the grape Fiano has been grown for over two thousand years. Fiano is a wonderful and versatile food wine as well as a delightful aperitif.–From Wine World’s tasting notes.

This wine had a great, fresh taste. My first sip made me wonder how good it would be. But it turned out to be wonderful. The hint of minerality nicely balanced the fruit. This would be good with shellfish and with dishes served with a cream sauce, such as fettucini alfredo.
From: Sicily
Winery: Mandra Rosso
Year: 2008
Goes with: Its fresh acidity makes it a fine partner to rich food; seafood, chicken, pork dishes, creamy sauces, rich cheeses.

Acrobat Pinot Gris from King Estate 2008
What: Here’s a marvelous Pinot Gris at an easy-on-your-budget price. This beauty is made from their estate organically grown grapes by the premier Oregon Pinot Gris producer, King Estates. Taste it and you’ll see why it has garnered awards and high accolades. Lively aromas and flavors of pears and citrus, a nice note of honeydew melon with just a hint of spice. –From Wine World’s tasting notes

This fabulous wine was Wine Spectator’s wine of the week in December. There’s a lot to like here, with a very smooth finish on lively wine. Acrobat is a second label for the acclaimed King Estate .
From: Oregon
Winery: King Estate
Year: 2008
Goes with: Herb roast chicken. Creamy cheeses. Mustard & coriander crusted salmon. Aperitif.

J Lohr Estates Wildflower Valdiguie 2008
What: Wildflower is a vibrant, red-purple in color with bright aromas and flavors of boysenberry, Bing cherry and raspberry. Its luscious fruit and balancing acidity make Wildflower a delightful aperitif and also a very good food wine. Grilled salmon, sausages. This wonderfully appealing light-bodied red is made from the Valdiguie grape, a grape originally of the southwest of France. Now it is grown very few places besides Jerry Lohr’s cool Arroyo Seco Monterey vineyards.–From Wine World’s tasting notes

This is a longtime favorite. This is a red wine for folks who think they don’t really like red wine. Very fruity, without overpowering your taste buds. Light, fresh taste. Good for sipping on the porch. From: California
Winery: J Lohr
Year: 2008

Cost: $35-38

What: I’ve had the J Pinot Noirs several times and they never disappoint. Winemaker George Bursick selects great fruit from throughout the Russian River Valley to create a magical blend with an elegant style and grace. In Bursick’s capable hands, the Pinot grapes become a work of art. While most of us can’t afford to drink great French Burgundies, this wine equals them in elegance and complexity.

Floral and blackberry notes fill your nose when the wine is poured. As it opens you get a hint of cocoa and cinnamon. As you drink it, cherry and strawberry tastes explode in your mouth, with a long, smooth finish, balanced by a crisp acidity. Each lot of wine was aged for 15 months in French oak barrels. The wine is then blended and returned to barrels to allow a gentle integration. The wine rests for another six months in bottles before it is released. All this special attention results in a spectacular wine.

Winery: In 1986 Judy Jordan left the family business (Jordan Winery) to produce finely crafted varietals and sparkling wines that have become the hallmark of the Russian River Valley. The sparkling wines captured the public’s attention first, and they are magnificent, but the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay have received even greater acclaim.

Pinot Noir is one of the most difficult grapes to cultivate, and certainly one of the most difficult wines to produce with excellence. But when it is done right, it is divine. Only a few spots in the world produce exceptional Pinot Noir, including Burgundy and the Russian River Valley. What makes Russian River so spectacular is a wide variety of soils and a cool coastal climate that makes for a long growing season.

In his quest to produce “truly memorable, iconic wines,” Bursick tries all kinds of combinations and yeasts to come up with just the right blend. He and Judy Jordan have hit their stride and produce many memorable wines, including several sparkling wines, Pinot Gris, Viognier, Pinotage and some specialty wines.

Goes with: Lamb, duck, roast chicken, pork tenderloin, salmon, all kinds of grilled meat. I had it with beef curry brought over by a friend, and it was fantastic. The philosophy at J Wines is that food and wine enhance each other, so the wine is made to pair well with food.

It was time to see if I made a good purchase or not of the Feast of Fools from Magic Hat. Or were we a Ship of Fools? This is a Variety Pak that has 3 bottles of 4 different brews. Back in January we sampled by luck (or bad luck) their Odd Notion Winter ‘09 first. This is a seasonal brew they make each year but using completely different recipes. The taste for this year’s brew was not what any of us were expecting. When I noticed the March 2009 expiration date on the box I thought I had bought out dated beer. The Voice, the all knowing, all seeing, social media beer observer at Magic Hat saw my Tweet and my post and sent me an email. He asked what the date on the bottles were. The expiration dates on the bottle said 2010. He said that the stamping of the expiration date is a manual job and someone goofed. And if there was “Howl” in the 12 pack then it was current because it wasn’t in last year’s pack. Finally, the yucky beer …. well it was yucky at the time because it wasn’t like any Winter Seasonal we’ve ever had. The Voice said “our Winter Odd Notion this year was an American Sour Ale. If it tasted a little sour, it’s okay. It’s brewed with acidulated malts, which makes it make you pucker up.”

The Tasters: Brett, Mark and Dan

Well we definitely puckered up including our sphincters. (I also realized later if the date on the box were properly set to March 3, 2010 it would still be off since all the bottles inside were marked “F 10″ or February 10. Better work on that expiration date stuff Voice.) UPDATE: The Voice contacted me and said they were going to start dating the bottles instead of notching the labels. And a machine will start date-stamping the boxes.

After solving the yucky beer mystery I tried to get Mark back over to taste these but the Odd Notion left him with a bad impression.

The weather is starting to improve so we decided to take a bike ride on Sunday. Brett joined us and even Mr. Ben rode behind me in his trailer. Twice around Lake Olmstead, then a nasty short hill near my house Mark picked and Brett was ready to toss in the towel.

Perfect time for a backyard tasting. I’ve had the Magic Hat Feast of Fools chilling in the mini fridge since that cold January day. Tossed some logs in the chiminea and we were set. Mark also brought some ales he had been saving for a backyarder. Plus we had a few that Brett bought for the last tasting but had to back out at the last minute.

Here’s what we thought:

Magic Hat Howl Winter Seasonal

What: The boys decided the smell wasn’t quite right. “Wet dog hair” is what Mark likened it to. All agreed the flavor is good. Smooth. Nice color deep red hue against sunlight.” Got a little crisp to it… a Winter crispness” said Brett. This brew kind of grows on you. Mark warned. ” Nice and smooth. Just don’t breath when you drink.” Nice to have once a year. Keep it a seasonal.

The bottle (and all the bottles except the Odd Notion) say this is a “Black and Night Winter Lager.” It also explains “The ancient ritual of brewing a distinctly rich and flavorful beer is a performance to behold. Our mysterious melange of time-honored ingredients, harmonize with chaotic chemistry, humble patience, and blind fait to create unique beers to share in the rousing company of kindred spirits. Cheers!” Seems kind of Halloween-looking to me but it says Winter Seasonal.

Magic Hat Lucky Kat IPA

What: No wet dog smell this time according to Mark (he’s familiar with wet dog smells since his dog is a big as a VW Beetle). “I like the smell better but it ain’t great.” Honey color, nice head. You get a quick citrus flavor, leaning toward orange. Floral smell. Then Mark chimed in with “like you rubbed flowers on your wet dog.” Brett couldn’t smell the dog in there. All three of us agree that the first taste is very hopper, followed by the citrus taste that mellows out the hops but then comes a bitter aftertaste. A kind of a bitter acidic aftertaste that lasts for some time. Brett likes a bit of citrus so he gives it a thumbs up. Me and Mark… no so sure. Worth a try once a year.

The label, with a cat that looks like its read for Mardi Gras, says “Beer Kitty, Kitty.” I’ve tried that call on Moxie-the-Dumbass cat to no avail.

Magic Hat #9

What: Mark smells flowers. Brett doesn’t. I won’t say what Mark said the color looks like. Man, he’s so critical. We agree that it looks like an IPA. Nice head. Fizzy. Better than the Lucky Kat but not as good as the Howl. Much sweeter. A lighter beer. More like a summer ale. “Mow the grass and drink it. It kinda hints at being fruity but then again its not quite fruity.” I’ve had this on tap at Mellow Mushroom and thought it was a good pizza beer. Not sure I would order it to drink by itself. The label says “Ale with natural flavor.” Not sure what that flavor might be. Sweet bite on the back of the tongue. Not heavy. No after taste. To me this is a keeper but like I said I would prefer it with some pizza.

Odd Notion Winter 09

What: Last but not least. The Odd Notion. The beer that skunked us last time. Looks like a Bass or Killians.. Fairly nice aroma. Nice head pretty color. Lemon flavor. Beer flavored lemonade is how Brett described it. But nothing like the hard lemonades. He’s the shocker…. Brett likes it. He admits it doesn’t taste like it looks. “No. I like the citrus. A nice lemony hot afternoon brew. I wouldn’t drink a lot. I would prefer a weiss beer with lemon squeeze than that. Not having a weiss, this would suffice.” Mark added “You would expect a Killians by the look but the taste and visual don’t match.” Of the four brews Brett says this is No. 2. Mark gives it No. 4.

The label says “Magic Hat’s Odd Notions are a series of exceptional (and mostly odd), limited quantity, specialty craft releases. The Odd Notion program provides serious aficionados with deliciously different drinking experiences that push the boundaries of taste-laden possibility in unexplored directions… and give our brewers regular opportunities to set their creative impulses free. Enjoy a different selection every season, in every Magic Hat Variety Pak.

If I had known it was an American Sour Beer then maybe I would have enjoyed it the first time. Managing expectations is important. I would say that this was interesting to try. I doubt I will ever see another American Sour. Brett definitely would like to see one. But The Voice said that this recipe would not be repeated next year because they try something different each year. They haven’t repeated a recipe yet. There is a web address on the label asking for people to rate it at oddnotion.magichat.net. Hey, how else can you explore different beers. I want to give them a kick in the tush for mislabeling the expiration dates. That pretty much screwed up my expectations. But I give them a thumbs up for at least pushing the limits for me without having to endure some weird homebrew somebody made in the basement.

After finishing the Feast we switched to Mark and Brett’s brews.

Ommegang Abbey Ale

What: Okay, Mark is getting set in his ways (or getting forgetful). At the last backyard tasting he brought this beer. Since Brett didn’t make the last one you can read what we said here and then go back and see what we said back in January. 8.5% alcohol. All of us agreed it was good but most definitely a different kind of beer. Mark added a “very refined high end beer. It’s almost sexy pulling cork out of it.” This is a corked beer complete with wire tie-downs. “Not your dad’s Budweiser. More of a beer connoisseur’s beer. Not working man’s beer. You almost have to wear a smoking jacket.”
Hint of chocolate malt. Brown foamy head. After passing the tongue there’s a nice warm aura as it goes down. Little creamy. We served it around 40 degrees. The bottle recommends 50. We let it warm up (got time since this is such a big bottle. Can’t drink it too quick). Its nice malty flavor comes out as it warms up. Brett added it has a “much stronger alcohol taste. An acquired taste I think. I wouldn’t drink it and drive home. Both Mark and Brett said comparing to other abbey ales “Chimay is better than this.” But both think this is a good abbey ale. (Mark is now banned from bring this to another backyard tasting. We need to try something new).
Brewery: Ommegang
Size: 25.4 oz.

St. Peter’s Cream Stout

What: This stuff is opaque in the glass. Wow. After pouring some out we realized it was in a green bottle. You couldn’t tell with the beer inside. Not a lot of head like you see on a Guinness. Much dirtier, shallow, head. Smooth. Very chocolatly. Sweet but bitter finish. Creamy.

Mark said “this is like seeing someone at a party. Nice person. they are noticeable but they don’t talk a lot and despite being apparent to everyone, not enough to keep you there talking to them. That’s this beer. It’s not a bad beer. But it doesn’t overwhelm me or tell me to drink more. Like Left Hand Milk Stout or Duck Rabbit Milk Stout would.” Brett chimed in “this is an everyday stout. Price wise was okay. Didn’t break the bank. Don’t have a clue as to what he paid for it.” (He then scanned the barcode with his iPhone and found the retail price is usually $4.99 a bottle).

The bottle says “Fuggles and Challenger hops combine with a blend of four different barley malts to create an aromatic, robust, dark chocolate cream stout with a satisfying bittersweet aftertaste.”
From: Suffolk, England
Brewery: St. Peters Brewery
Size: 1 pint .9 oz

Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout

What: Sweet. Not so dark. Light. Brett says it hints of being pancake syrup but Mark says pancake syrup looks darker. Both said “a good oatmeal stout. Expanding on his analogy ” This is someone I would talk to at a party. They would stand out and would have something to say and I would stick around. St. Peter’s in the shadow, friendly but not lively. Samuel Smith would be the person who had lots to say and you would listen.”

“Originally a drink for lactating mothers, oatmeal stout was described as nutritional on early labels. Oats are in the same family as barley, and a small addition yields great flavor. Popular in the late 1800’s, the last oatmeal stout was brewed before the First World War until Samuel Smith reintroduced this style in 1980. Almost opaque, with an unusually silky texture and complex, medium-dry velvet palate. Bittersweet finish. Serving Suggestions: Pizza and salad, Italian foods, steamed clams, grilled ahi tuna, lobster with drawn butter, steak, ploughman’s lunch, crumpets, shish kebabs, vegetable ragout and eggs Florentine, dark flavorful bread and aged Stilton. Serve at 55 degrees”–From their importer’s website
Notes:

Here are the wines to be presented:

Alexander Valley Sin Zin 2008
What: Varietally distinct, this Zinfandel captures the true essence of Alexander Valley. The fruit is sourced from a variety of vineyards with differing microclimates. This provides winemaker Kevin Hall with an array of unique parcels of fruit. Once vinified, these parcels are blended together and then allowed to mature in French and American oak for 10 months.
From: Alexander Valley, California
Winery: Alexander Valley Vineyards
Year: 2008
Grapes: 100% Zinfandel
Alexander Valley Temptation
What: When we added Temptation to our family of Zins, we wanted to show how the grape California has adapted as its own can wear many faces. If the Redemption Zin is a bit more regal, then Temptation is fun-loving and pretty laid back.

This new release displays all the trademark elements of a fine Zinfandel from Sonoma, where this varietal gained its fame. It’s predominately a blend of Zin from Sonoma’s Alexander and Dry Creek Valleys. There’s also some Zinfandel from Solano to the east of Napa, adding some nuance to this great value Zin. We suggest picking up a few bottles, kicking back and enjoying the fun flavors here of Bing cherries, blackberries and cranberries along with notes of cloves and cinnamon.
From: Sonoma, California
Winery: Alexander Valley Vineyards

Alexander Valley Chardonnay
What: Winemaker Kevin Hall’s philosophy has always been to produce wines that truly reflect the qualities of the vineyard. That approach is particularly true with this 2008 Estate Chardonnay. To make sure the crisp fruit shines through, he fermented and aged 70% of the juice in stainless steel. The remainder went into barrel, where it was subjected to frequent lees stirring before being aged in French oak.

Those steps produced a beautifully textured Chardonnay that exhibits lush apple and pear flavors along with some tropical fruit notes, just a touch of vanilla and a hint of minerality. Kevin’s approach also makes this a food-friendly Chard, perfect for dishes ranging from roast chicken to sauteed bay scallops
From: Alexander Valley, California
Winery: Alexander Valley Vineyards

Alexander Valley New “Gewurz” Gewurztraminer
What: The Alexander Valley may be a great place for growing Cabernet and Merlot. But a grape like Gewurtraminer needs more temperate
surroundings to develop its trademark flavors of tropical fruit and spice. That’s why we sourced the fruit for our New Gewurz from cool climate vineyards in Mendocino County including sites that have been organically farmed for some 40 years. In fact, the organic fruit is one piece of our efforts toward sustainable winegrowing, efforts that include equipping the winery with solar panels and using organic approaches in the vineyards. Those endeavors have been recognized by the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance.
We call this wine New Gewurz because it is a new take on what most folks think about Gewurztraminer. The wine greets you with ripe flavors of pear, apple, grapefruit and lychee and a bit of spice. At the front, there’s a hint of sweetness that then flows toward a beautiful dry minerality at the back end.

Alexander Valley Vineyards decided a few years ago that the New Gewurz was one of those wines perfectly suited to bottle under a screw cap. While the vast majority of our wines are bottled with natural cork closures, we decided a lively wine meant to be drunk within a year or two of release should be sealed with a twist off cap. This twisted trait is now shared by our New Gewurz, Temptation Zin and our dry Rosé of Sangiovese.
From: Mendocino County, California
Winery: Alexander Valley Vineyards
Goes with: The New Gewurz remains an incredibly versatile wine when it comes to pairing with food. The wine is particularly adept at working with foods that can be hard to partner with wine such as spicy ethnic dishes. But it’s also become a favorite at Thanksgiving with turkey or at the Easter table to enjoy with ham. And its affinity to work well with seafood has landed New Gewurz on the wine lists at many sushi restaurants.

Alexander Valley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
What: There are few places better suited for Cabernet Sauvignon than the Alexander Valley, which is why it’s become our signature wine. Warm summer days tempered by morning coastal fogs combine to help create a refined Cabernet that is at once approachable upon release, yet with the fortitude to develop with time.

In the glass, the 2007 Estate Cabernet displays big aromas of black cherry, cassis, cocoa powder and plum and flavors of cassis, black cherry and plum along with soft, integrated tannins. This is certainly a great wine to serve with beef, whether braised short ribs or a Tuscan steak rubbed with olive oil and rosemary.

From: California
Winery: Alexander Valley Vineyards

Alexander Valley Two Barrel Red
What: There are folks who like a velvety, lush Merlot. And then there are those who prefer the gumption of a Syrah. For each, we offer Two Barrel, a wine that blends the best of both in perfect harmony.

Two Barrel was originally inspired by our Wine Club. Each spring, club members would come together to create their own special blend. The wines were made in small quantities and generally available only at the winery. To bring the concept to a larger audience, we conceived Two Barrel, proving that the whole is just as brilliant as the two parts.

The 2005 is half Syrah and half Merlot. The Syrah side offers some floral notes along with elements of blueberry and a bit of earthiness. For its part, the Merlot contributes black cherry, plum and chocolate notes.
From: Alexander Valley, California

Here are the wines to be presented:

Andezon VV 2008
What: AN ERIC SOLOMON SELECTIONS CUSTOM CUVEE
In 1994 Eric visited the Vignerons d’Estazarques and met a young, passionate director/winemaker named Jean-Francois Nicq. By the end of the day, he & Jean-Francois had decided on a custom bottling of old vine syrah from one of their best parcels, Andezon.

This opaque-black, blockbuster Syrah could have been Australian Shiraz. What a find! Previously sold in bulk (vinous suicide) to a very famous producer in the Rhone Valley, Eric jumped at the opportunity and over a decade later it remains one of the core items in the Eric Solomon portfolio.
From: Cotes du Rhone, France
Winery: Domaine d’Andezon
Year: 2008

Roger Sabon Cotes du Rhone 2008
What: Fruity, seductive, with silky tannins which make it pleasurable to drink immediately.
FOOD RECOMMENDATION AND CONSUMPTION :

This wine needs to be drunk between 15°C to 17°C with barbecue and appetizers.
WHAT WE CAN SAID ABOUT THE WINE :

This red Cotes du Rhone is highly representative of its appellation. It is a fine example of the excellent quality that can be achieved by the wines of the South. It is fruity, generous and elegant, the perfect wine to be drunk at an informal get-together with friends.

From: Cotes du Rhone, France
Winery: Roger Sabon
Year: 2008
Grapes: Mostly Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault.
Black Slate Porrera 2007
From: Germany
Winery: F. W. Langguth
Year: 2007

Frederic Giachino Abymes 2007
Castano Hecula 2007
From: Spain
Winery: Bodegas Castano
Year: 2007

Artazu Aratzuri 2007
From: Spain
: Artadi
Year: 2007

Alto Almanzora Este 2007
What: COLOR: Color cherry picota intense violet tones.
AROMA: Powerful, clean, elegant and complex. Toques smoky, spicy, black fruit (plum, blackberry), against a backdrop of mountain herbs and minerals dry.
PALATE: Lots of red fruit (cherries, blackberries, etc) well integrated with the wood (vanilla, toffee) and hints of licorice. Very fat volume, good structure, balanced and round. Fruity aftertaste, long and very pleasant.
GASTRONOMY: Game, red meat, light meat, poultry, snacks, cold meats, cod, smoked, marinades, cheeses, pâtés and fish dishes intense.
From: Spain
Year: 2007

Gramona Grand Cuvee 2006
What: Gramona’s history is long and storied and the property has been a quality reference point in the zone for decades. As far back as 1816 a member of the family has been making wine in the Penedes. 1921 marks the year when the Gramona name began to be put on bottles of “Cava Champagne”. Today, the house is one of the few remaining family-owned estates in the region, with many having been bought by large companies.
At Gramona, time is never an issue. The wines receive perhaps the longest average ageing than any other cava and are never released until they are pristine. 70% of the cavas produced in the zone are released after 9 months. Gramona ages a minimum of 18 months, and an average of 4 years.
Gramona is, unfortunately, one of the last remaining family-owned cava houses of the Penedes. Here, elderly ladies from the village carefully wrap each bottle before being packed for transport and the entire operation is carried out by people who love the family and the estate.
