Bottle Toppers For A Giggle

What: Bottle Toppers

Cost: $5.95

Why: These whimsical bottle toppers are great stocking stuffers, especially with St. Nicholas Day approaching (Dec. 6). That’s when children hang up their stockings, expecting St. Nicholas to fill them with little goodies. That’s what we did when I was a child, even though our apartment and later our house didn’t have a fireplace. We just laid the stockings by the door to make it easier for St. Nick. I still celebrate St. Nicholas Day.

What red-blooded American male wouldn’t love to see one of these in his St. Nicholas stocking? They’re great at parties, or even a small dinner at home. After you open a bottle of wine  you stick one of these in to keep the wine from oxidizing too quickly. They come in all shapes and sizes. I have some that are personalized, one with art glass, some with golf themes and one a friend gave me after a trip to Provence.

Bottle toppers come in a variety of styles.

The stoppers pictured above let you get a chuckle or two as well. My two favorites are the ones that look like women have fallen into the bottle head first, and they’re kicking their legs to try to get out. One looks like a shapely Santa elf and the other looks like a slinky Can-Can dancer, complete with feathers and fishnet stockings. Some of them even have tall, black boots.

You can find bottle toppers at wine shops and specialty stores all over town, but the ones pictured here come from Wine World, 133 Georgia Ave., North Augusta, S.C. Prices can vary widely, but these cost $5.95.
